Alex Payne, 23, is a native of Altoona, Iowa. Payne is currently the producer of KCCI 8 News this Morning. However, he started his journalism career at its competitor, WHO-HD in Des Moines. He graduated from Drake University in 2016, majoring in Broadcast Journalism.

Payne is an award winning journalist, receiving such awards as a National Edward R. Murrow award, Eric Sevareid award and two Emmy nominations.

Before starting his career at WHO, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of his college’s newspaper, The Campus Chronicle. While serving as editor of the Chronicle, he won seven Iowa College Media Association awards, including First Place General Excellence.

Growing up in Altoona, Alex is no stranger to Des Moines. He attended Southeast Polk High School, and is still active in the Altoona community.

In May 2014 he published his first book, Images of America: Altoona.

Payne serves as the vice president of the Altoona Area Historical Society and is a former member of the board of directors for the Des Moines Historical Society. Payne continues to put hours into renovations and creating displays for the Altoona Area Historical Museum located in the old Porter Hardware Building in Olde Town Altoona.

He first started studying the history of the Altoona area when he was 10 years-old in Kathy Turner’s third grade class. Payne joined the Altoona Area Historical Society at the age of 13 and was elected to serve as the society’s vice president at the age of 16.

When not doing historical research, Payne finds time to paint and draw along with other artistic endeavors. He also enjoys traveling and has visited to 9 countries around the world.
